Will Belle the Boston Terrier Be Able to Have Puppies?
For what seems like forever we have been waiting for Belle to come into heat so she can be bred. It turns out our ruthless sheep might ruin our chances for Belle to be a momma.
We almost had a MAJOR setback… Belle was injured. Of course I was scared to the point where I thought she might not be able to have puppies. We still aren’t positive she will be able too. Nothing is set in stone until puppies start popping out.
Belle has been due to come into heat any day…
Typically when she goes outside to go potty I tie her up. It has been so cold that when she is done, she immediately wants to come inside. We also have a momma sheep that escapes out of the pen EVERY SINGLE DAY. For some unknown reason this sheep has a grudge against dogs.
About a week ago Belle went outside to go potty…
unfortunately she came back whimpering.
For days if Belle was touched in the wrong spot she screamed. In the following picture Belle isn’t feeling very well.
We couldn’t even figure out what spot was hurt! If we picked her up she screamed. If we petted her in the wrong spot she screamed. Sometimes she limped with her whole leg in the air… Sometimes she acted like someone had stepped on her toe. If we surprised her she SCREAMED!
Her stomach was ROCK HARD!
She was starting to get swelling that caused her tail to go sideways…
All my greatest fears started flooding in…
Something is messed up inside of her?! She will never be able to have puppies. I will have to buy another dog to breed.
The day of her vet appointment she came into heat.
It turns out that Belle is really just a big baby. Its so true. When I took her to the vet she was feeling better, even though the day before I thought she was falling apart. According to the vet her stomach was probably hard because she was so tense… she was so afraid of the pain that she would shake.
Belle is definitely more sensitive than the average dog.
She was put on an anti-inflammatory and the vet said that if she acts well she can be bred. She won’t be breed-able for another 9 or 10 days anyway.
It turns out her tail was starting to turn at an angle because of swelling from coming into heat.
One thing is for sure… I’m going to keep a close eye on her. As a Boston terrier she wants to make friends with everyone. Its in her nature… she found out the hard way not to make friends with sheep.
What Have We Learned From This?
Don’t underestimate a momma sheep.
Don’t overestimate how much pain Belle is in.
