Should We Be Allowed to Make a Profit on Dog Breeding?
We make a profit on cattle, sheep, poultry, swine, and previously horses. Why is their an issue with making a profit on dogs?
My family has a pot belly pig that is as important to our family as the dogs, and I have never seen issues with making a profit off of a pig.
When dog breeding is portrayed in the media the dogs are typically being rescued from a Puppy Mill. Unfortunately, the breeder was probably making money on these poor dogs by denying them care.
They typically look a lot like the dog in this picture… malnourished, flea ridden, and down right MISERABLE. The thing is there will always be someone out there wanting to abuse the system.
I want to make it clear that we do NOT agree with the above picture.
We have not bred a litter of Boston terrier puppies yet so we do not know if their will be profit or not. I do know that their are people out their who make a living off of breeding dogs. I don’t know how they do it, only that it is possible. Although, from what I have read most people don’t make a profit.
Some breeders show their dogs, and typically in this case any profit they make goes into the costs of showing.
I can understand why some people think dog breeders are evil. Their have been multiple cases of dogs being rescued from shelters who weren’t licensed. The pens were to small, the dogs were covered in fleas, and some of the dogs have barely even seen light. These are NOT the people we are discussing.
The breeders we are talking about know how fast vet bills add up.
Sometimes a dog breeder might make some money, and sometimes they don’t. Some dog breeders NEVER make a profit.
A good breeder will spend money to give dogs the care they deserve. These people should not be ridiculed for their hobby.
Let us move back to the question that we posed in the heading.
Why is their an issue with making a profit on dogs?
Probably because there are many people who do not give their dogs basic care. When the average person thinks of dog breeders they think of sick dogs, not healthy ones.
Its easy to forget the good and remember the bad.
Here at Journey to Dog Breeder we believe that if dogs are getting the care they deserve then there is no harm in making a profit.
