The featured picture shows the wooden floor we have to work with. It was the original floor in the portable building. Our original plan was to paint it… even after using oil based exterior paint it didn’t seem to help out the floor much. Not to mention how hard it would be to clean dog poo off this floor.
What is the next cheapest option? What is easier to clean?
My husband purchased us the cheapest linoleum money can buy. He knows his wife well! It was $94.00 to cover the 10′ X 16′ floor. One thing to keep in mind with linoleum is that it tears very easily. Dogs with long nails could possibly tear it if a nail gets stuck. MAKE SURE THERE AREN’T ANY ROCKS UNDERNEATH THE FLOORING. In other words sweep well.
Step 1: Roll out the linoleum, and flatten. Try to make it as flat as possible on the floor with it being as even as possible on all sides of the wall. The linoleum should go up the side walls. It should lay against all sides of the building. Place the flooring down as you would like it to appear later on. Make sure the lines and markings are at an angle you are happy with.
Step 2: Cut the extra linoleum off. After your flooring is as flat to the ground as possible use a utility knife to cut the extra off. Use the sides of the wall to keep your line straight. Remember this is just a dog kennel so it doesn’t have to be perfect, but make it as straight as you can.
Step 3: Apply adhesive. Purchase some MAX GRIP tape. It works well! Make sure the floor is cleaned very well so that it will stick. We didn’t mop our floor, but you should because it caused our floor not to stick very well. Next time I will make sure to mop. If needed, later on we can add staples. The weight of items on the floor will help hold it down too.
On one side roll up the linoleum, then apply the double sided tape to the wooden floor.. See the instructions on the box for how to best do this. When you are done taping, unroll your linoleum making sure it is completely flat.
Repeat on the other side of the floor.
Step 4: Run, stomp, and squish the floor down! My toddlers loved this part.
Do any of you have a kennel? What kind of flooring do you have? Any ideas on cheap flooring that is easy to clean, and sanitize?
